AI for customer service that customers don't hate

· Ian Bensley

AI can genuinely improve customer service - or ruin it. The difference between an assistant that helps and a bot that traps people, and how to build the first kind.

We've all been trapped by a bad customer-service bot. So it's fair to be sceptical when someone suggests AI for support. Done right, though, it makes service faster and better - for customers and your team.

What customers actually want

A fast, correct answer, and an easy way to reach a human when they need one. That's it. AI is great at the first and must never block the second.

The pattern that works

An assistant grounded in your own help content and order data answers the common questions instantly and accurately. Anything it's unsure about, or anything sensitive, it hands to a human with the full context - so the customer never repeats themselves.

Measure the right thing

Judge it on resolution and satisfaction, not deflection. A bot that 'deflects' by exhausting people is a failure, however good the stats look. Built this way, an AI assistant lifts service instead of degrading it.
