Build, don't just advise: the problem with strategy-only consulting

· Ian Bensley

Most consultants hand over a strategy and leave. Here's why the gap between advice and execution is where value quietly dies - and what to do instead.

There's a familiar pattern in consulting: a smart deck, a roadmap, an invoice, and then… nothing. The strategy sits in a shared drive while the business carries on exactly as before. The advice was fine. The execution never happened.

The execution gap

A plan nobody builds is worth precisely zero. And the handover from a strategist to a separate build team is where things go wrong: context is lost, scope drifts, and the thing that gets built isn't the thing that was designed.

Why one person who does both is different

When the same person scopes and builds, there's no telephone game. The roadmap is realistic because it's written by someone who has to make it real. And you get a working system at the end, not a document. That's the whole idea behind how I work - strategy and the build, from one person.

How to spot advice-only consulting

Ask a simple question: "Will you build this, or just tell me what to build?" If the answer is the latter, budget for a second engagement to actually ship it - because the ROI only shows up once something runs.
